To Serve And Protect

I am confident that many of our police brethren are serving admirably and with distinction. I can also understand some police being cut loose to take care of all of the police families who were also affected but this story just disgusts me. It was reported on the news this morning that 1/3 of New Orleans police walked off the job. Interestingly enough I talked to a Memphis Police Officer about this last night and in the same breath that he defended the cops who quit he claimed "President Bush dropped the ball on this one." As expected, I couldn't let that one pass and took him to task.
New Orleans Police Turn In Badges

New Orleans, Louisiana (AHN) - As devastated residents crack while starving under the squalid conditions of Katrina's aftermath, some local police are feeling defeated enough to give up.

Chief of the Louisiana State Police, Henry Whitehorn, says there are numerous instances of police officers, many of whom are residents from flooded areas, turning-in their badges. The chief says the police have lost everything and don't feel it's worth going back to take fire from looters and lose their own lives.

One stranded tourist says after asking a police officer for help, he told her to "go to hell"; indicating it was every man for himself. There is still little to no relief for the tens of thousands lined up at the Superdome, despite the sound of military helicopters overhead.

Downtown, a large fire has erupted in a dry section of Canal Street while individuals fire at helicopters trying to drop supplies to devastated hospitals. The shooters are screaming at pilots to take them out of the city.

You know I guess I shouldn't be surprised about the police. After all the Mayor left the city as well. So much for the "Captain" staying with the ship.
