Proving My Case . . .

Dr. Condoleezza Rice had this to say about the disaster.

"I don't believe for a minute anybody allowed people to suffer because they are African-Americans. I just don't believe it for a minute," said Rice.

"I see people across the spectrum -- Asians and blacks and whites and Latinos -- helping each other. What you are seeing is Americans are helping Americans," said Rice.

While defensive about race allegations after Katrina, Rice conceded the response could have been better.

"People couldn't evacuate who were poor, people couldn't evacuate who were elderly, people couldn't evacuate who were sick. We have to understand better so this doesn't happen again," she said.

En route to her home state, Rice personally defended the president. "Nobody, especially the president, would have left people unattended on the basis of race."

Of course the Congressional Black Caucus had this to say.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 2 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Members of the Congressional Black Caucus held a press conference today in which it was that asserted God "cannot be pleased" with the Bush Administration's response to Hurricane Katrina and suggested race is a factor affecting the likelihood of a person's survival in the aftermath of the hurricane.

Speaking at the press conference, Rep. Rep. Elijah Cummings (news, bio, voting record) (D-Md.), said "To the President of the United States, I simply say that God cannot be pleased with our response." Cummings also said: ""We cannot allow it to be said that the difference between those who lived and those who died in this great storm and flood of 2005 was nothing more than poverty, age or skin color."
